The ‘Northern Lights Folk Festival’ was first held in Bell Park in 1972. It was a free one-day music festival on one stage; needless to say it has grown exponentially since. It remains Canada’s longest continually running outdoor music festival, holding its 45th edition in 2016, and taking place on the picturesque shores of Ramsey Lake in Bell Park, in the heart of Sudbury. Over the years, NLFB has grown into a seasoned presenter of Canadian roots and modern music, and a lightning rod for the energy of Northern Ontario’s artistic community. Inventing tradition, fostering innovation, celebrating community, since 1972.

PATRICIA CANO- Sarah's Back Yard Peruvian Patio Jazz Fusion Party
I had a chance to record this concert on September 21, 2019, hosted by Patricia's good friend , Sarah Armitage, in Sarah's back yard. Patricia was joined by local percussionist Jack Broumpton and Paris based guitarist Carlos Bernardo. It was a fabulous evening of song and food ( prepared by Patricia's mother Cecilia) including several Peruvian tidbits ( which disappeared long before the sound tech was finished!) .
Patricia Cano was born in Sudbury, ON where she grew up in a Peruvian household. Upon graduating from University of Toronto in Theatre and Spanish Literature, Patricia spent five years working in Paris (France) with the world-renowned theatre company Le Théâtre du soleil, during which time she was sent to Seoul (South Korea) for three months to study traditional South Korean folk singing and drumming. After leaving the French company, Patricia spent 7 months in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) listening, playing, singing and feeling her way through the exceptional Carioca music scene! In 2009, Patricia launched her singing career here at home with her debut album called “This is the New World”, co-created — in four languages — with her Brazilian musical partner, Carlos Bernardo. This album won “Best Album — Solo artist” at the NOMFA 2011 (North Ontario Music & Film Award Conference). Patricia has toured the world alongside Canada’s premiere Cree playwright and composer., Tomson Highway, singing and performing his songs and stories in a one-woman Cree cabaret. From Montreal to Rio de Janeiro to Prague and beyond, this collaboration continues today. In 2010-11, Patricia was invited to join the National Arts Centre’s English Theatre Company. In 2012, she starred in a Peterborough production, as well as a French National Arts Centre co-production, of Tomson Highway’s newest one-woman musical The (Post) Mistress. In May 2013, Patricia closed the Montreal festival “MMM”, and most recently performed at Luminato (Toronto).
Born in Cardiff, Wales, Carlos Bernardo spent his childhood in Rio de Janeiro. In the middle 80's the passion for rock puts Carlos Bernardo in the path of music. The guitar was his first instrument and first invitation to improvisation. A few years later he signs his first work with his group, the Con'fusion Jazz co. In 1995 he recorded his first solo album: Pacifico, with a jazz-fusion quintet, putting together his influences from rock, jazz and Brazilian music. .In 1998 Carlos Bernardo made a short visit to the Théâtre du Soleil in Paris where he met the composer and musician Jean-Jacques Lemêtre. From then on Carlos saw possibilities of other musical instruments and the association of music and other forms of art. In 1999 he joined the Théâtre du Soleil as the musician-assistant to M. Lemêtre. This was during the creation of the play “Tambours sur la Digue” (Flood Drummers) and the world tour (France, Canada, Belgium, Australia, Japan, and Korea). He currently divides his time among music, theatre and teaching. In 2018, he and Louis Simao came together to form Velha Guarda, a new group that features their own compositions, as well as new arrangements of Portuguese folk songs. Bernardo is a jazz and world fusion artist whose career is living proof that music is a universal language. In Sudbury, he has developed an enthusiastic following going back to 2008 for his collaborations with singer-songwriter Patricia Cano.
Jack Broumpton is the Chief Judge of the Canadian Drumline Association and is currently performing with the Brian Quebec Trio, and the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra. Jack was an Assistant Professor of Music from 1986-2000 at Huntington College, Laurentian University, and Cambrian College, adjudicated in the Ontario Drum Corps Association, and served as provincial chapter president of the Percussive Arts Society. He marched with the Flying Dutchman Drum & Bugle Corps (Kitchener, ON), the Guelph Royalaires Drum & Bugle Corps (Guelph, ON), and the Midlanders Drum & Bugle Corps (London, ON), where he continued as an instructor.Jack’s personal performance highlights would include drumming for Oliver Jones, Slide Hampton, Maynard Ferguson, Mike Murley, Hugh Fraser, and Pat LaBarbera.

Kevin Closs - NLFB 2019 CBC Workshop Stage
In Deep, The record chronicles his five years working as a musician and guide in the Arctic and Antarctic. From Nunavut to Greenland, Svalbard in the Norwegian Arctic, to Antarctica and South Georgia, Closs has been travelling to the most remote parts of our planet. The history and natural beauty of the polar regions inspired Kevin to begin a song-writing project initially supported by a grant from the Ontario Arts Council.
In Deep In the winter of 2019, Closs created a Kickstarter campaign to fund the recording of the new songs. The campaign exceeded its goal and the recording was completed in June. Kevin debuted the new album with a mainstage appearance at Northern Lights Festival Boreal in Sudbury.

Matt Foy Live at Tucos Taco Lounge - August 30, 2020
Driven by 50's and 60's instrumental music, Matt Foy will take you on a cinematic journey through dust bowls, dive bars and speedways. Having played with countless projects over the years with some of Sudbury's best musicians, Matt Foy occasionally allows the spotlight to shine on him and his love for early guitar music. If Ennio Morricone, Link Wray, Ed " Big Daddy" Roth and Daniele Luppi formed a band, it might sound a little like Matt Foy.
Matt is a recipient of Northern Lights Festival Boreal's Jackie Washington Award. This award is granted to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the arts and culture of Northern Ontario and embodies the spirit of the festival in their artistic pursuits.
